FAQ

What is your jewelry made out of?

All of our (The Land of Salt) pieces are 14/20 gold-filled, .925 sterling silver, or 18k gold plated over brass (1 micron thick). All of our jewelry is nickle-free.  It will state on the listing what each piece is made from. We also carry jewelry by other makers, and the materials used should be on the listing.

  • 14/20 gold fill is the next best thing to solid gold. It is 50-100x thicker than plated jewelry, so it can last years and years  if taken care of properly. It is important to note that gold-filled metal does have a slightly more pink hue than solid gold, so if you are buying this to match a wedding ring, the coloring may be slightly different.
  • .925 Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver and contains 92.5% by weight of silver. Sterling silver may tarnish, but can easily be polished back up with a jewelry polishing cloth.
  • Our 18k gold plated pieces are plated 1 micron thick over a nickle-free brass core. We choose to plate over brass rather than sterling silver for coloration preferences. We also include an extra layer called an e-coating, which is a clear ceramic layer that helps extend the life of the piece. There are certain styles you can't make from gold-filled, so this is why some of our pieces are plated. If you take care of your plated pieces (i.e. not wearing them in the shower, storing them in a jewelry box) they can last many years before needing to be re-plated.

How do I find out what my ring size is?

There are many methods online to measure your ring size with a string, here is one method: http://shop.diamondideals.com/education/find/ring_size.cfm

However, we strongly recommend you stop into a jewelry store (any of the mall ones will work) or swing by our store to get measured. The string method isn't always accurate.

Can I shower with my jewelry on? (Jewelry Care)

You can shower with the gold pieces (though it is better for the piece long term if you don't), but water speeds up the tarnishing process on silver and brass. It's also a good idea to take off your jewelry when applying lotion or perfumes, ect.

If your piece does end up tarnishing, it can easily be polished back up with a jewelry polishing cloth. We like to use these ones ones: https://www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Polishing-Cloths-Silver-Jewelry/dp/B075Z1DGVL/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Sunshine+cloth&qid=1552092433&s=gateway&sr=8-3

The black on my stamped ring wore off, what do I do?

From time to time this will happen, especially on rings that have seen lots of love. It's a very easy fix, and we are going to let you in on our super top secret way to turn them black again.... its black nail polish! We know it's not fancy, but we find that it works better than most commercial grade stamping fillers. Simply brush on a little black nail polish, let it dry, the lightly go over it with a cotton swab and nail polish remover. We are also happy to re-blacken them if you mail them back to us.
